Trauma Literacy Training

Trauma Literacy Training

This training will provide an overview of stress and the stress response, to include vicarious trauma or secondary traumatic stress and direct traumatic stress, with specific emphasis on identifying the signs of stress and building awareness around the stress response. Secondary traumatic stress is unique to those in helping positions, who are exposed to the traumatic stress of the individuals they are supporting. By virtue of their positions, they regularly witness and hear firsthand accounts of traumatic stress, which can often be disturbing in nature. This intimate exposure subjects the helping individual to psychological harm, which can have adverse impacts on mental health if not appropriately addressed. Other significant impacts of secondary traumatic stress include burnout and compassion fatigue, which will be briefly addressed.

The second half of the training will provide an overview of trauma-informed care and communication strategies, to include active listen, empathy, validation, and trauma-informed questions.

The training will conclude with the topics of resilience and self-preservation, to include trauma stewardship and recognizing the impacts of trauma. Self-preservation strategies will address self-care from a preventative lens, as well as long-term stress management.
